Diamond growth technology affects quality in small, specific ways. It can influence a stone's colour tint, the kind of tiny inclusions it carries, and how consistent it looks. It does not change hardness, sparkle, or durability, because lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds.
What Is Diamond Growth Technology?

It's the lab-grown diamond technology that turns pure carbon into a diamond crystal. Every method starts with a thin slice of diamond, called a seed, and builds on it.
There are two main diamond growth methods today: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) and CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition). Nature's diamond formation process takes billions of years. A lab needs weeks. Gem institutes sometimes call this synthetic diamond technology, but the stones are real diamonds, not imitations.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?
Both routes in the diamond manufacturing process end at the same crystal. The diamond growth process just differs.
| HPHT diamond growth | CVD diamond growth | |
| Idea | Copies the heat and pressure inside the Earth | Builds the diamond layer by layer from gas |
| Temperature | About 1,300 to 1,600°C | About 900 to 1,200°C |
| Pressure | Extreme, over 870,000 psi | Very low, inside a vacuum chamber |
| Carbon source | Graphite dissolved in molten metal | Methane and hydrogen gas |
| Growth time | Under 2 weeks | Around 3 to 4 weeks per batch |
In HPHT, carbon dissolves in molten metal and settles onto the seed inside a powerful press. In CVD, microwaves break down gas, and carbon lands on the seed one thin layer at a time. The rough crystal is then cut and polished, just like a mined one.
Does the Growth Method Change Diamond Quality?
Only in a few narrow ways. Here's where lab-grown diamond production shows up in the finished stone:
| Quality factor | HPHT | CVD | What it means for you |
| Colour | Nitrogen kept out to avoid a yellow tint | Often grows brownish, corrected before cutting | Both reach colourless grades |
| Clarity | Tiny metallic specks possible | Graphite specks possible | Both get graded, so check the report |
| Consistency | Colour zoning can show | Even colour is typical | Cut and grading matter more |
| Size | Large, gem-quality crystals | Large, gem-quality crystals | Carat is rarely a limit |
None of this touches hardness. Both score 10 on the Mohs scale.
Is CVD or HPHT Better for Quality?
Neither wins outright. CVD is the more common of the two diamond growth techniques for jewellery today, while HPHT stays strong for top colour and fancy-colour stones. On CVD vs HPHT quality, the fair verdict is a tie.
Two diamonds with the same cut, colour and clarity from the same lab look identical to the eye. That's the honest answer to HPHT vs CVD diamonds, and it's why House of Quadri uses both methods and has every stone IGI certified before it becomes jewellery.
What Is Post-Growth Treatment, and Should You Worry?
No. It's a normal finishing step, not a defect. Many CVD crystals come out brownish, so labs heat them (a process called HPHT annealing) before cutting. The colour improvement lasts, and it doesn't make the stone softer or weaker.
What matters is disclosure. An IGI report tells you whether a stone is as grown or may include post-growth treatment, and it often names the growth method too. Read those lines before you buy.
What Really Decides Lab-Grown Diamond Quality?

The 4Cs, plus the craft and paperwork around them. These lab-grown diamond quality factors matter most:
- Cut: Drives sparkle more than anything else. Shape counts too, so see how special diamond cuts handle light.
- Colour, clarity and carat: Read them together. D to F colour and VVS1 to VS2 clarity look colourless and clean to the naked eye.
- Diamond type: Type IIa is the purest category.
- Certification: An IGI report and a laser inscription on the girdle tie the stone to its paperwork.
Our diamond education guide explains each of the 4Cs.
How Can You Check Quality Before You Buy?
Four quick checks:
- Ask for the IGI report and read the growth method and treatment lines.
- Look at the cut grade first. A well-cut stone can outshine a bigger, poorly cut one.
- Match the laser inscription on the girdle to the report number.
- See it in person. Visit a House of Quadri store or book a virtual appointment to compare stones.

FAQs
Is HPHT or CVD better for jewellery?
Neither is better overall. Both make real, durable diamonds. Judge the finished stone by its cut, colour, clarity and certificate.
Are HPHT and CVD diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. They share the same carbon structure and chemistry as mined diamonds, and labs like IGI grade them the same way.
Can you tell how a diamond was grown by looking at it?
No. Even trained jewellers need lab instruments. Gem labs read internal growth patterns, which is how a report can name the method.
Does growth technology change the price?
Not by much. Cut, colour, clarity, carat and design move the price far more.
How long does it take to grow a diamond?
HPHT takes days to weeks. CVD takes around 3 to 4 weeks per batch, before cutting and polishing.
The Bottom Line
Diamond growth technology decides how a diamond starts. Cut, grading, and certification decide how it looks on your hand. Choose a stone with strong 4Cs and a clear IGI report, and the method behind it becomes a footnote.
